Got my first clam

I'm pretty excited. What kind is it. The guy told me but I can't remember what he said? Now he did have a really pretty baby one there but I remember y'all telling me to go for bigger and that's what he recomended as well this one wasn't as colorfully as the other one he had but he was telling me that this one he liked better because of the way the mantel was laying. The other one Wasn't as wavy like this one but it did have more color. Will this ones color get better? It's a bit patchy looking I don't know if these guys shed or if there is something I can give it to help the colOr

It needs intense light compared to most clams.

It is a fairly slow grower that maxes out about 8".

The coloring looks nice. It should brighten up a bit after it gets some good light.

 

Well crap. I was hoping it was one that didn't need a ton of light. I have it under t5. Should I put it up higher. Or is there a good brand of bulbs I can buy

 

T-5 is fine... if your bulbs and fixture are good.

ATI, Geismann, UVL... all good bulbs.

What do you have now?

 

What came with the tank. It's the jbj bulbs. I can order better if need to

 

Keep the clam up on the rocks. It lives in the wild on rocks all of its life. Keep it in the top half of the tank. Not much color change to come with it unfortunately. It does look to be healthy and happy. Do not tear it loose if it has attached to the bottom of your tank, it will most likely die.

 

i have him just sitting on the sand ..does he need something to grab onto or is the sand fine?

 

If you have a flat piece of rock or something I would put it underneath the clam to keep it happy. They like to attach to something to keep their byssal opening protected.

 

Thats a bit disturbing..it was attached to the bottom of the tank at the LFS. Should i be worried?
