I would look into either The Book of Coral Propagation by Anthony Calfo, or Aquarium Corals by Eric Borneman, as good reference guides to corals. For inverts, there's Marine Invertebrates by Ronald Shimek. For fish, there's a similar book in the same series as Marine Inverts that I've seen in nearly every LFS.

Can not beat Scott. W Michael on good reference books that you can fit in your back pocket and take to the LFS. Good pockett guides and standard books. He has been though it all....

Marine Fishes by Scott W. Michael is one of the best reference books I have seen. It tells you everything you need to know about ANY kind of fish before introducing it into your aquarium!!! :)

I have Reef Aquarium Fishes, also by Scott W. Michael and it is a great book too. I even take it with me when I go to the LFS, so when they say, "no that fish won't ever nip at your corals", I can say bull****.
