Do you have a good recommendation for an RODI unit that would be appropriate for a 90 gallon tank? Do these just fill up a bucket over the course of a day and then shut themselves off? What are the basics of use and operation?

an RO/DI unit is a must in saltwater keeping. I use tap water (we have decent tap water here) for my planted fresh water tanks since the stuff going in feeds my plants but i wuld never use it for my saltwater tank (I have in the past and it wasnt a good idea)

Likely the reason for your issues. I used tap water when I first started and ended up tearing the tank down after hair algae and cyano took over.

Interesting. Thanks for the tips, guys. My cousin had the tank stable for 5 or 6 years on tap water, but it never hurts to improve the overall system. I'll check out the RODI systems.

Thank you for all the feedback.

Hmmm . . . those videos don't really explain the basics. I understand both DI and RO in industrial applications, but what's the basic setup here? You put this thing under your sink and have it fill buckets with water until a level switch turns it off? Or do you constantly have it feeding into something? I'm a little bit constrained in that my aquarium is installed at my office so I can't just install a RODI system under the sink without getting some buy in from the property owner. Just looking for the basics of how these are used.

I ordered a RODI from bulk reef supply. It comes with three hoses -
    1. Input line (red)
    2. Waste line (black)
    3. Output line (blue)

Yours May of course differ. I also spent a bit extra to get the built in TDS meter and the extra canister to be more water efficient (I'm in CA).

I went to the hardware store and bought a marine hose (a hose that is safe to drink from). Hose plugs into my spigot and then I plug in a hose adapter to the red line (was included with my unit).

Then turn the water on the spigot and presto clean RODI water from the blue hose.

(First time you will have to run it for a bit to prime the system)

I have the waste going into buckets to water potted plants. Or you can just leave the waste line in your yard.

There are a bunch of 'in house' solutions but I don't have a lot of space.

Oh and of course you will need a receptacle to catch the clean water.
