Aquarium City in Canoga Park, CA is an iconic Tropical Fish Store that has been in business since 1967.

Aquarium City has a retail cube system to hold and display small fish for sale. Heavily stocked retail holding systems are particularly susceptible to a build up of Nitrate and other organic compounds. The system typically holds hundreds of fish that require frequent feeding to thrive.

The cube system eventually reached a high of 160ppm of Nitrates. The staff at Aquarium City decided to run ecoBAK ULNS Pellets in a fluidized reactor to clear up the system.

The ecoBAK runs in an RK2 fluidized reactor inline with an RK2 Commercial Protein Skimmer with an Ozone System. System water is pulled into the RK2 intake pump and pumped into the fluidized reactor feeding the ecoBAK and then flowing into the RK2 Protein Skimmer. The Ozone is mixed with the incoming air and is extremely effective in the RK2 Protein Skimmer because of the very long dwell time in the massive Skimmer body.

ecoBAK greatly increased the efficiency of the Protein Skimmer and the use of Ozone really cranked up the nutrient export. After a few months the Cube System now reads 5ppm Nitrates.

I visited Aquarium City a recently to see the system in action. They had just received a large order of fish from local distributor “Sea Dwelling Creatures”. The cubes already had a great selection of fish and the new fish from ‘Sea Dwelling Creatures” looked healthy and colorful, as always. The Cube System features high efficiency LED lighting to display the fish.

The cubes themselves were very clean and the Staff at Aquarium City reports that ecoBAK has also reduced the amount of nuisance algae and increased water clarity. It is very important to offer healthy fish from healthy holding systems and Aquarium City offers some of the area’s nicest fish and corals and I highly recommend a visit to check them out.

Do you need a system like that with ozone to achieve those results? Those pellets have got my attention

No, ecoBAK gets similar results with basic systems too.

The vast majority are able to get PO4 and NO3 near zero and stop using GFO.
