Thanks, haven't taken a lot of pics of the tank lately and especially of the fish.

LOL, if you much closer than I was you will only have a few scales in focus at f/1.4.

Yes, but that is how you get the bokeh to really pop :)

Very nice shots. Im surprised that you were at an ISO of 1600. You didnt have much noise in the shot for using that high of an ISO.

True but we are not looking for a lot of bokeh in our tank pics very often.

If you expose well you can eliminate the noise. I ETTR on those photos 1/3 to a full stop. Then brought the exposure down in post. Using ETTR of a full stop and them bringing the exposure down in post you can use ISO 6400 on a 7D and get some very nice looking shots.

Perhaps not a full tank shot, but for individual subjects... it's great for isolating the subject from the background. This is absolutely no different than a subject out of water, the same principles still apply. As always, it's up to the photographer in terms of artistic expression. I don't want to derail the thread, you've got great shots either way.

Agreed, I have some great shots of individual plants and fish from my planted tanks that are well isolated.

No derailling of the thread since it is about depth of field. Bokeh is a result of depth of field partly.
