BRYOPSIS: Learn what it is and how to kill it.

I have some now in the fuge. Leave it there correct?

 

I read Bryopsis sends out spores once nutrient levels drop to where it cant thrive that go dormant until levels rise again. I had it 'quarantined' in my tank for months but now little patch have shown up ;-)

Although the big problem went away when we transferred our stuff from the 180 to the 90, there were still a few patches that popped up from time to time. We found that "injecting" dissolved magnesium (in the form of epsom salts) directly onto the patches of bryopsis did it in pretty quickly. If only we had tried that back when it was in the 180!

 

If your fuge is stand alone or very low flow yes.

 

how is this done? do you dissolve the epsom salts in the smallest amount of water? make a paste of it?

 

Dissolve the salts in water. Consistency should be thin/watery, not thick. We used one of the larger syringes from a Salifert test kit to "inject" the solution onto the bryopsis. I'll have to ask my husband what the water/magnesium ratio was.

 

thanks i think i may have a small patch of this the size of a quarter. on a bottom branch rock that cant be pulled with out pulling all.

i think you could have something there, i recently had the nitrates rise a lot. after trying to run sockless for 2 weeks, and this stuff showed up ( what i believe could be bryopsis at first i thought it was hair algae ) it showed up out of no where it seemed.

sock is on and a few larger water changes has got things back in check. but now to get rid of what ever this is.

i have read that lettuce nudibraches eat bryopsis. is that true?


oh i want to add i had what i thought was hair algae out break all over the tank. when the tank was new and before the skimmer. i added the skimmer and started to use brightwells reef boi fuel and bacter 7. in 5 days the rocks looked clean again. free from what ever it was all over. now i wonder was it hair algae? or bryopsis? or both?

 

I had some grow out on zoa frags. Used a 10 minute dip in a 10 to 1 ratio water to hydrogen peroxide mixture and it killed it with no ill effects on the zoas. Also had some on a live rock with no corals attached and dipped it to kill the algae and the coraline survived fine
