I picked up a Chalice yesterday (I'll try to get a pic as soon as I find my camera ::)) and put it at the bottom of the tank. I noticed this morning that the outside rim was completely white and it almost looks like a skeleton. What should I do? I just put it under a ledge. I only have a 2 bulb T5 fixture, but is even that too much light?

    Thanks!

I'm gonna say it's stressed since it was moved yesterday. Might have had a little die back? Did you acclimate it long enough? I don't think a 2 bulb t5 should be over powering for something like that.

I drip acclimated it for about 2-2.5 hours along with an Acan, Duncan, and Fungia. The others are doing good, but I have another thread for the Fungia :p

Check your parameters, are the pieces close to anything else that might be trying to sting it? i mean chalice are normally somewhat aggressive themselves but maybe one has met it's match.

It's not near any corals. I'll check the params today.

it could very well be params, might as well test. I personally cannot keep any chalices and have never found a solid reason(i have softies and various LPS under 4X54W T5). its possible that there is a reason but we dont have a method to test for like an intolerance to softies secretions. isolate the best you can, test params and keep an eye out for possible invaders.

    Good luck!

If the skeleton is starting to show and its peeling back, then it sounds like you have it in an area with too much flow. If the lighting was too intense your chalice would most likely bleach as you said all over, with a fading lose of color, but if the tissue is receding it sounds like too much flow. I have found chalice to be quite forgiving in water params, but in terms of flow and lighting, those are your big too. It likes mod/ weak light on average( some species can handle med/strong light) and low flow.

Also 2 t5's is not a lot so it should be fine. But it is important what type of lighting did the chalice come from. because if the bulbs were quite old, there is a number of reasons. As well I have come across a few species of chalices, that hate light i literally was only able to grow them under a ledge with no direct light on it.

And lastly some frags that have some die off on them are just impossible to save, your best chance is to start fragging and do a dip and hope for the best.

I don't think it had much flow at all, but we'll see how it does under the ledge.

It came from LED's, not sure what brand, though.

How do I know if it has any die off?
