Aquarium Myths | Baby Clams

That's some interestingly conflicting information. Croceas are the shallowest living clams and therefore need the most light. Derasas are the deepest living species, and need the least amount of light. To lump them together as far as care is not IMO correct.

If one clam can be kept under LEDs than they all can. They all share the same basic means of gathering and using light, so a source of light that's good for one is good for them all (of course they will need different amounts of intensity.)

 

I keep a maxima on my sandbed with LEDs. The type of LEDs is certainly important in that question however.

 

(quoting dude at the LFS) "well, I would stay away from a squamy as they are the most finicky of clams, i would try a derasa or a crocea because they require less light then maximas, and I personally have never kept a maxima under LEDs."

LED is a par38 7 bulb, over a biocube 14.

 

You'd be fine with any type of clam in that case.

However, I will warn keeping any clam in that small of a tank might become a challange. They can use a lot of elements quickly and you don't much volume there.

Mike i must say that while you have given some great facts as to why you dont absolutely have to feed baby clams I see you have missed one very important fact. Clams do not require direct feeding....

But you dang well better give em water.. sorry just me trying to be humorous.

 

I think I actually got to that around paragraph five. Glad you enjoyed it. It's amazing how much there is to know about clams. I'm still learning new things about them all the time.
