Just like to see any veterans or newbies on here. I'm still a frothing barrel of kook and just like to hear crazy surf stories. it's always fun to hear what the vets have to say and especially the guru's.

    I've got one for you
    Kind of unique though.

Near you, in Galveston Bay, exists one of the longest waves- anywhere
It's from the Tanker Waves in the shallower part of the channel/bay, brought on by the massive ships going inbound thru the bay in the channel.
the wave is actually not in the channel, near the massive tanker, but in the bay near it.

This wave in the the Geniss (sp?) book as the longest wave riden- on surfboards.
While I"ve never been lucky enough to have a board when it's happening,
I have surfed this wave- for a long time- on my buddies catamaran sailboat!

That's right, my friends H18 Magnum. I too have catamarans, but we were on his boat that day, and what a ride it was!
We surfed that wave- one wave, about 2 miles! It was awesome!

I think you just gave me my life goal lol. I've heard stories about that and I'm pretty sure it's right next to East Beach. I bet if a east wind hits thst shore with a good sized tanker rolling by you could catch some of the biggest waves Galveston has seen without a hurricane.

I know East Beach all too well. Most of my cat sailing off the beach has been and began at East Beach Galveston.
The tank wake/wave is actually further in the bay, just west of the esat end of the Tx City Dike , on the southern side/toward the dike.
There is a DVD/video of the surfers ride on the wave traveling in the Bay, I have a copy somewheres.

I gotta look around online and see if I can find vids or it. my only problem with the whole thing is finding the right time when the tankers go through. hell if I had a schedule that would make things a whOle lot easier but I can seem them questoning it with terrorism or something similar if j were to ask around for one.

Yep, you just have to be in a small power boat, and in the bay near the channel- not too near they're worried though.
Go out on a few days and see if you can see them. It's near or between the high range and low range marks for coming in the channel on the big ships.
It only happens when there is a big tanker, moving at good speed, and on certain bay water level heights. It does happen though- I've surfed it- on a catamaran though. that boat is/was an 18ft boat.

If you can, launch a small boat off the dike and go watch for a while.

I do think the boats have a 'schedule' per se, and come in at random, day and night.

Ir you can get on that wave- it will be one of the rides of your lifetime!

I started surfing before I could even ride a bike. I've been fortunate enough to live on the same street as Kelly Slater and Matt Kechele as a kid. I still golf with Kelly's brothers and I also started up the Cocoa Bch Surfrider chapter with his Mom. I've surfed everywhere from Fl up the coast to NY. Cali, Costa, Pr, and headed to Nica hopefully this year. Never surfed in Texas though. I've caught many hurricane swells in the gulf and I'd say those are some of the best waves I've ever ridden.

LOL at "Fan Boying" My area of Florida is a breeding ground for good surfers and I've been lucky enough to share water time with most of them. Both Hobgoods grew up here, the Lopez brothers were always here as well. Kelly obviously is by far the favorite. He sneaks in town from time to time. He owns a house on the river in Cocoa Bch. as well as many others scattered all over the world. Here's a pic of him back in 2010 when they unveiled the statue of him in Cocoa Bch.
