Algae ID please

I know there is a post with a link to look up algae types but I cannot seem to find it. Anyone have the link? I checked reef cleaners but could not find a match.

I am trying to ID this growing on my overflow.

Is it slimy? Does it easily slough off with water movement? Looks red/brown?

 

Not slimy and brushes of fairly easily. Don't think it cyano.
Color is exactly that, a reddish brown. Been growing slowly over last 8 or so months. Did not want to brush it off in case it causes it to spread. No where else in DT or sump except this overflow. Put a power head near it 6 months ago but no change.

I am still inclined to say Cyanobacteria. There are hundreds of different types of marine Cyanobacteria. We only see the most common types with the reds and the blue/green varieties. Unless someone has 1st hand experience with this type then you might never nail down the exact name. The use of a microscope would probably help to narrow it down.

If it were in my tank I would siphon it out, repeatedly if need be. A medium size diameter piece of tubing should do the trick. Of course check nutrient values, that way you can intervene with some GFO if need be or take nitrate reduction methods.

Are you using any bio-pellets or carbon dosing?

Is the area more shaded then other areas? It probably likes the overflow for flow volume as well as suspended particles and dissolved organic compounds are easily available.

You could try the use of a UV if the algae becomes more troublesome.

 

I am running biopellets, cheato, and uv. Rest of tank and sump is algae free. 3 AI Hydra up top so lights fairly strong. NO3 around 2, have not checked PO4 in years since never really had issues. May invest in Hanna checker.

I like your recommendation and may siphon during my next water change and see if it comes back. Or see if the mushrooms overgrow it like they did every inch of the rest of the DT
