When you'll stumble across something useful for your aquarium. Case and point was this past Monday. I found myself aimlessly wondering the aisles of Walmart and remembered I needed some new socks. So I pick up a pair of Hanes throw it in my cart and check out.

I Get home and begin clipping tags and what do I discover?

    This:

Socks were attached by those plastic T tag attacher thing a ma bobs... As soon as I seen it I immediately thought ... Man that would be perfect for an overflow cover for my tank!

So I cut the hook off and grinded the plastic down a tad and, voilà!

It's like it was designed for my overflow! Lol it fits on close to flush, and that's fine by me .

The spacing between the grates seems like it's about 1/8th inch or just under 4mm (3.17mm) take your pick. All I know is that snails will now be banned forever from my sump... As soon as I figure a way to attach it securely so that it is 1. Secured enough it won't float off, and 2. Easy to remove and reattach in the event it needs cleaning and I need to get to the nut for my bulkhead in there. I'm thinking of drilling a tiny hole into the overflow box big enough to run fishing line around it and tying it off.

What do you think? Good idea? I realize I now have the realistic potential of getting all of those ~135 holes clogged or blocked or obstructed by what ever, but I have a strong feeling that those odds are in my favor ( of it not happening and flooding the display) so long as I make sure the snails/debris in the tank aren't big enough to get caught or if they do I can just manually remove them there, vs a pump in my sump.

Was also thinking of some sort of frag rack/probe holder in the event I start growing corals, and or have a controller that needs probes to he held.

Just a friendly reminder to be ever aware of things around you, they may be reef worthy ;).

Dude,Vinny. it's funny you should say that because I was reading my thread for the first time from a viewer/readers point of view and not a writers, (I'm not the only one who does this I hope) I thought man I shoulda inserted a comical reference to a filter sock when I said I was buying socks... But I left that for you bud :)

But no they're on my feet! ;) lol

Thanks Todd. I'm just like you I look at everything and say how could this work on my tank...
Thanks ofk. I bet the manufacturer of the hanger, braiform, wound not have. Haha glad to see I'm not alone there. I re read everything but it was funny as I was thinking it , vinny said it... Lol
I'm the same way, coylee, I'm the same way.
Thanks Matt! It does make one feel a bit accomplished, perhaps a tad confident, when you take something and implement it in a way it wasn't initially designed for. Even if it is as minute and simple as this.

Oh I get it. My favorite moments in this hobby have been from my DIY builds.
