I just picked up the baffles for my sump from the glass store today. They are a snug fit. They slide into place but there is very little wiggle room (one of them wedges perfectly in with no space between it and the tank wall).

Is this a problem? I read somewhere else that sometimes tight fit baffles expand and have resulted in cracked sumps? Is this only for acrylic baffles since they expand more than glass or is this a risk for my glass baffles as well?

I really want to build the sump tonight but I don't want a burst sump in a few months - should I take them back to the glass shop and get them to shave an 1/8 of an inch off?

you sure? the glass wont expand into the sump walls?
Once this sump is together and under my stand the only way to remove it is to remove the DT and take apart the stand.

    thanks

nope. I have ran two for over a year without a hitch.. I even have them drilled near the baffles which is a weak spot. You will appreciate what a sump gives..

Oh Bama, side question: how much space do I need to give the intake pump for the skimmer and the skimmer outgoing pipe from the sump sides to not impede flow and make noise.

I am so excited about building this tank that I am now getting worried about forgetting something obvious and end up screwing it up.

Thanks so much for your help!!

    Well thanks for the advice.

It sounds like I should be fine. The baffles are perfectly snug and stand on their own when rotated into place. But it doesn't sound like glass should really expand in ~80 degree water. The glass store who cut the baffles also confirmed that the glass should not expand and thus being tight shouldn't matter. So... Unless I hear otherwise from someone in the next few hours, I will go ahead and silicone in the baffles.

    Thanks

your good to go, the glass needs higher temps to expand enough to ever be a real issue.

yes you are fine. if the baffles were gonna expand, the tank would too anyways.
