Well I got my annual update from RapidLED and this time their new fixture caught my eye. In my opinion this light is going to sell a ton. It's one of the first few cheaper led units that features cree diodes and UV diodes. Most other cheap lights I have seen with cree chips are lacking in the uv. The only drawback so far is that it is not dimmable and on off only. But for 260 bucks it is hard to beat the light output from this thing. (Details below)

Welcome to Onyx by Rapid LED! We are proud to introduce our simplest yet most elegant product to date. Onyx has a built-in fan, anodized heatsink, rubberized cover, and 28 awesome LEDs in the following ratio for a beautiful ~16-18k color temperature:

    • 14 CREE XT-E Royal Blue
    • 8 XP-G Cool White
    • 4 Violet UV
    • 1 XP-E Green
    • 1 Oslon 660nm Red

This unit currently only has one channel and is non-dimmable so all lights will come on/off at the same time. We expect to begin shipping these units in early January, and will continue taking pre-orders for at least the next couple of weeks. Retail price on these units will be $279 once the pre-sale ends, and more pictures/video will be available at the end of November.

    Specs:

    • Dimensions: 6" x 13" x 2" (l x w x h)
    • Weight: 3.75 pounds
    • Hanging Kit: Included
    • Lenses: 100 degrees for red/green, your choice of 60 or 80 degrees for the other LEDs
    • Power Consumption: 100W max
    • Warranty: One year

Thanks! We're working on a dimmable version (3 channels, white/blue/color) but not sure when that's going to be out. Definitely some time in the first half of 2013 but don't have any ETA yet.

Also, keep in mind it's $259 with the hanging kit and shipped within the US. Some people are charging $30-40 for the hanging kit alone!

IMO all the LED fixtures available on the market still aren't as good as a DIY... With a DIY you can control everything and get a lot more bang for your buck....

I know what your saying, but a lot of people in the hobby arent diy capable. I just priced it out at Rapid LED and to build a fixture similar would cost just about the same ($240+) and it sure wouldnt look like that premade fixture.

As for performance of this compared to what i could build at my house....its using the same parts so i dont see how it would perform any differently other than the diyer getting the perfect led combo that they want.

Two would be great over a 75 or 90g tank (since they have the same footprint), if you look at the PAR charts it's plenty of light for a 24" x 18" area (PAR chart can be found in the pictures here, we'll enlarge and add more information on the chart soon: Onyx by Rapid LED - Rapid LED). On the 75g I'd go with the 80 degree optics.

Yes and with 80 Degree Optic Lenses. 12+" off the water for good light spread.
