I ended on skipping the clam because the foot was torn badly. It looked like it was frayed and wouldn't retract the foot when playing with it.

    :(

Well the gf wanted a different clam so we placed an order for a Blue Maxima, either Ultra Blue or Super Blue.

    Thanks everyone for the help

It was a bummer, we drove 70 miles there to pick it up but once we all discovered there were issues he gave me a free Thrive Clam Kit and a very vibrant fluorescent orange ricordea yuma.

thats only the byssal thread which the clam uses to anchor itself onto something similar to a spider spinning a web, the foot is totally different and is located inside the shells. the byssal threads can by frayed or cut off and they can make new byssal thread every time they land somewhere else.

There is no myth to making sure all the air is released from the inside of a clam... Preferably you never expose it to air in the first place, not that it seems to matter near as much as some people act.

Plenty of clams in the wild are exposed to air at low tide, so exposure to air isn't really an issue.

However, burping is a valid practice, as trapped air inside the clam will cause issues/death.
