The customers they have, have almost no involvement with the maintenance, if any at all. It is all hired out to I am assuming their networked maintenance companies. Typically these companies, remove dead fish and replace them same day with the same fish. I am sure the customer knows a fish or multiple fish have died, but when you know absolutely nothing about how the reef actually works, how do you tell the guy fishing them out and replacing them what went wrong. If you don't know why they die, and it is explained as just something that happens with new fish, and you're getting it replaced, why would you even question it?

"What do breeding rooms, quarantine systems and procuring the animals have to do with adding bacteria to a tank?"

Further, all of these steps indicate a direct correlation between how much effort a public aquarium takes in order to ensure healthy livestock combined with them understanding the biology it takes to make an ecosystem function properly, and taking ALL of the necessary steps to continue on with this pattern of perfection. Why would you spend a huge amount of money to do 80% of it right and then just half ass the rest? It makes no sense whatsoever. I can see the thought process now, "Sure we'll spend 100k to build a display, set it up properly, get quality livestock... but hmm why don't we just get some chemicals, bypass nature, and dump extremely rare fish into a tank that we didn't bother to cycle properly just to save some time."

    Jeesh, internet detective expert.

    Sorry, don't take offense.

I just wish people wouldn't be so critical until they have facts. You seem to create facts from your own opinions. Personally, I would be very offended to be called a liar based on someone's opinion, but thats just me.

I do remember one episode where they showed the plumbing for a tank because it was too tall to do daily feedings so they had to build a feeding tube into the plumbing.

I think it would be cool if they went more in depth into the filtration for the tank but that stuff is boring to 99% of the people watching the show.

I am not taking offense, just pointing out your unnecessary hostility.

It really isn't just my opinion, it is fact based upon his statement, and my involvement with the public aquarium in our area. Really though, we digress.

I would love to work in a public aquarium and be apart of building and maintaining those large tanks

Remember guys there are many different ways to be successful in this hobby. Some may allow nature to take its course, others may choose to shorten that cycle by using a product. Can it work? Sure. Will it work like Brett Raymer stated. I might have to question his credability. The guy is a business man and will do anything to make a buck. This show however is giving our hobby the most exposure since Nemo. Definitly good and bad at the same time. Although I am entertained by their show, I was pretty much laughing at how Brett talked to me like I would just beleive anything that spewed from his mouth. In the end he was really just trying to sell me on his product line.

Dr. Tim knows bacteria pretty well and he might be the best person to ask if this is possible. I think you guys might be shocked at how fast bacteria populations can multiply. Every 20-30 mins If I recall. Knowing this, I have no doubts that things can be manipulated to spur a near instant cycle. You just need to provide the ideal environment which includes nitrogen phosphate and a carbon source. limiting any one of those things will slow reproductive rates but feeding it you will be on your way to a populous bacterial population.

If Brett tell a lie that he beleives to be true is he stil a liar? I guess we have to question what level of knowledge Brett Raymer has. I for one question if he beleives the @#$% he spews. I for one chalked it up to marketing hype as I saw the dollar signs in his eyes as he was pitching his products.

All true... but building delays and grand openings have to happen and quite often there is not time to do stuff like Husbandry wants. I as well have Public Aquarium connections and I hear about these delays all the time. I do know some use bacteria. Do they claim "instant cycle", nope, but they do utilize it. Fritz has been selling it to P.A. for over 30 years. It's used quite a lot in aquaculture as well.
