In my 10 gallon, I have a large fantail & a medium - sized comet. Once ,in this forum, a guy said he added a few tetras to the mix. Instead, could I add a few fancy guppies ?

    Ive seen it done Oceansurf
but the fancy decorative tails of modern cultivated guppy strains look a lot like flake food to your average gold fish

swordtails and platies are a better option IMO and again not the fancy long flowing finned varieties

Thanks Steve, but I really have my heart set on guppies. Do you think it would be worth a try ?

I have plastic plants because the goldfish uproot the real ones. I could put floating real plants on the surface to give the guppies ( & babies ? ) shelter. The trouble is, I've never had any luck with real plants of any kind. Can you suggest a real floating plant that even I couldn't kill.
( LOL ) A plant that requires little care. ( fertilizer, etc. )

    I would only want 2 females & 1 male.

You didn't rule it out altogether. Is it worth a try ?

    Thanks.

My Local pet store said it can be done, but the floating plants would not work because the goldfish would eat them too. I'll have to see if he has an alternative.

    The Charms of Duckweed

a floating plant that requires nothing at all
this stuff grows like crazy, has fine hair roots ideal for baby fish
but it will cover your tank in a few weeks, so you have to net some out and dispose of it every so often

Guppies are quick, so its worth a try IMO, but be prepared with a breeding trap / net
in case the goldies start fin nipping

if you want some small fish get octos (otocinclus) they stay small and get along well with golies but some don't come out and swim some do but guppies could work but goldfish sometimes snack on them if they are big enough.

also about plants at pet co they sell theas floating balls of like moss or algae but i have lots of that in my goldfish tanks and they eat it every now and they but it grows fast enough to not disappear but slow enough it doesn't take over

Guppies are tropical fish. Goldfish are coldwater fish. One won’t live long. If you keep the water warm for the guppies, the goldfish will be unhealthy. If the water is cold for the goldfish, then the guppies won’t last long.
Plus a 10-gallon is too small for goldfish long term.
I don’t want to sound mean, I’m just trying to help :)

+1 with fish-aholic. Gold fish are cold water fish, even though I have seen both in the same tank. If you go to your lfs you will not see gold fish and guppies in the same tank. jm2c

NOOO it wont!!!!!!!!!!! gold fish is a cold water fish and guppies are tropical fish!!! Gold fish needs a period, when it has cold water in the tank, like when it is winter outside. But guppies need the water temperature always above 20°C.
