tahiti maxima clam (asking for opinions and advice)

I currently have a crocea that is about 3 inches and was debating on taking the plunge to get a 2-2.5 inch tahiti maxima clam. So I've been doing my research on these and people have had hit and misses on tahiti maxima clams. Is that still the case? Also any particular thing I need to do to ensure the health and growth of a 2inch? I had my crocea at 2inches originally and I never spot fed it or anything and its fine. Just curious if anyone had better insight. thank you!

 

No need to feed the maxima either. As to how healthy Tahiti clams are I have no idea.

 

I have a question, I bought a baby maxima (I think it was) and did not feed it and it slowly died .....then, when reading on here, someone mentioned that baby clams should be spot fed. Which is right? - although I never question 2 in 10's advice......

 

As far as clams go you don't have to spot feed per say but you will get a healthier and faster growing clam if you do. All 6 of my clams benefit from feeding my reef plankton. Also, make sure your magnesium and calcium are always in check as the clams need them to live. My clams have grown at an alarming rate. I have 6.5 watts a gallon of T5 lighting, always have my elements in check and I feed multiple times a week. When purchasing a clam make sure there is no visible damage to the mantle and look them over for pyramid snails. As a precaution I always scrub my new clams down with a soft tooth brush. Maxima clams are very hardy and prefer sandy substrate. Post pics when you get it.

Do you think oysterfeast will work for feeding clams?

 

maximas are burrowing clams and prefer rock. I know alot of guys who have been keeping clams for a decade that say the same thing about maxima clams from French Polynesia. Hit or miss.

 

thats what I'm afraid of. I was hoping threads from '10/11 or so when I read about tahitian maximas not doing well they were just not shipped well or not taken care of very well through shipment/transit. Was hoping that was the case before and it has improved and not the clams not generally doing well in captivity.

 

i think there is a bit of that as well. I just know a bunch of people stay away, and then others also have no issues.

 

I wouldn't be to worried if your buying from aquasd. The clams I got from will have been top notch. As far as substrate goes, the only clam II've had that like rock was my crocea. All my maximas and squamosa prefer sand. When you get one just put him in a place ob rock or sand and if he sets his foot your good.

 

should I slide a small piece of rock under the maxima if I put him in the sand? I have reeflakes. for my crocea I did that and he loves the rock and I move him wherever.
