Local hardware doesn't have the plastic grate to prevent things from going in. So I'm going to do this makeshift mesh stopper. $2 butterfly net and $2 coupling. Done

Oh, that'll have to be cleaned fairly often.

OK, What am I missing here?
NIce work getting the snail out btw.

OK, a snail was in your return to the sump.
Is there only one return pipe to the sump?
And still, OK, a snail is in your return line- the only one perhaps?
HOW does that make the SUMP overflow? You did post your sump overflowed, right?
    I might could see the DT overflowing, yes in this scenario;
    but the sump?
    Still not seeing this scenario

Not liking that idea. If it gets clogged you are gonna flood your house. Can you not just get it from your lfs???

@todd well either he A -had his returns too low and never checked it.
B- when you decrease the flow it becomes harder to break the siphon and his drain sucked more water then usual.
C- The siphon break on his return failed.

That's just temporary until I can get to LFS. I have 3 of those big snails and another one was close to getting into overflow.
I'm not sure why overflowed. But here is what happened. Snail clogged plumbing into sump making overflow over flow back into DT. Sump would run dry. I turn off pump and water would flow back into sump from the return plumbing making sump overflow. Would overflow until mater reached my return nozzles in the DT to break siphon. Why it was going down that I don't know. I wouldn't consider myself a rookie and never had this problem. But once snail remove all is working. Weird. Maybe because air couldn't travel through intake it created flow back through return? Stupid snails

I think you figured it out. I think your returns turned into emergency drains, pulling a siphon, overpowering your siphon break. Someone, somewhere said that slower flowing water is harder to break than fast flowing water. I never heard this before, but, it sounds like you had a slow flow situation going on...
    maybe... haha

How long did it take for your sump to overflow when you turned power off?

Put at least one of your return nozzles close to the water line in the tank.Once its exposed to air it will break the siphon. Its going down the return because its underwater.lol

Hi, my name is Milton. I heard you may need our brand new snail insurance. It's 24.99 a month, but it's cheaper than the flood insurance for sure.... so... whadayasay, champ?

The drains to the sump reallhy didn't have anything to do with a sump overflow.
Ther DT would stop flowing water to the sump when it went below the level of the top of the overflow in the DT. Unless of course you have on with the slots at the bottom also.
Vinny is right about the return I think in this case.
Although even if the nozzle is way underwater, a 1/4" siphoin break hole near the surface drilled in the return would break the siphon- if no detritus, or snails were covering that.

Glad you got it fixed though. HOwever, if you didn't change anything on the return, and/or add a sophon break hole, have you tried a power off again? If not, IMHO, nothing should have changed, and it will still siphon back and possibly overflow the sump again?
