"The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" by Robert Fenner is a good start.

I would read that to get a background of FOWLR or FO systems but it's not enough to start a reef.

I would recommend the Bible, Torah, and Qur'an of Reefkeeping for an in-depth knowledge of the hobby. The Reef Aquarium: A Comprehensive Guide to the Identification and Care of Tropical Marine Invertebrates V1, V2, and V3 by J. Charles Delbeek and Julian Sprung.

I learned more in V1 about reef keeping than any other reef keeping book I have read and can't wait to start reading V2. These books do carry a hefty price but they have probably saved me some mistakes and deaths that could have been more costly.

Let me know which book(s) you end up buying because I am always up to a new reef book to read.;D
