I recieved a Acro Valida and a Mille in the mail yesterday. Acclimated for approximatley 3 hours, dipped, and then into the tank. Lights out. Today when I returned home from work I found the Acro to have RTN starting at the base in 2 different spots. I really dont understand this. All params are great.
    Cal 460
    PH 8.1
    ALK 9
    Phos 0
    Nitrite 0
    Nitrate 0
    Ammonia 0
    Salinity 1.025

I have acros and montis in my tank currently with no issues and good growth. This is the second time I have had new Acros struck with RTN within a day or so of entering my tank. One Acro just seemed to stop the RTN and then healed completely. Another loss considerable tissue however it did stop. What would cause my new SPS to get blasted by RTN as soon as they enter my tank? This is really discouraging. Thanks

What test kit are you using for PO4? Acclimation techniques could be the cause if an Ammonia build up occurred during shipping and you opening the bag after temp acclimation.

Are you dipping them prior to introduction to the display?

An acclimation of 3 hours is way too long IME, I have never acclimated a sps for more than 30 min in my life. Whether that is the cause I can not say but that seems like a long time to me.

Are you checking for parameter swings?
Do you have an ATO? Or a dosing pump?

Salifert test kit. I float for approximatley 20 minutes. (Probably should use Hanna right?) Then very carfully open and begin drip acclimation. I do my best not to disturb much and the lights go out within 10 minutes of introduction.

Yes I am dipping them for 15 minutes in Seachem Reef dip. Then drop in clean tank water and then into tank.

I use a 2 drip per second. This does seem to take an excessive amount of time. I am checking the DT params but if you mean in the container where the coral is then no I am not checking the container.

Yes I have an ATO. I compensate with new water 1 gallon at a time before I start acclimating to keep the ATO from dumping.

As I write this I can see tissue flaking off the Valida. The Mille appears okay. But I havent picked it up and looked at the back of the coral.

BTW the corals came from being under 400 watt metal halides at 15k. I have them placed a little above mid level under 175 watt halides with good flow. I actually just moved a power head to get MORE flow onto both of the new corals.

    Hmmm

    Well your parameters look good.

Perhaps change the dip product. I appreciate your careful acclimation, it just seems like so long to me.

Valida are pretty darn hardy so, I would sure consider changing the dip, perhaps you got a bad batch. Do you dilute this dip at all and with what?

Sorry to hear of the issue that is so frustrating.

I have my thoughts reserved on the Seachem stuff. I put 1 cap full in 1 gallon of water to dip.

Side note. The Valida was in an odd spot. Without going into too much detail the area where it was getting the most flow lastnight and today looks great. The other side (There are 6 branches rising out of the rock it came on over a 4 inch area) where there was not nearly as much flow is where the RTN is. I just changed out my GFO (to make myself feel better) and I have insured the entire coral is getting a very strong flow over it. Especially where the tissue loss is. I also moved it a bit a little closer to the Mille so it is getting the same lighting as the Mille. Anything else I am missing here? Thank you for your condolences.

I looked at the reviews of the product and they all seemed pretty darn good.

This is SW you are diluting it with right?

Sorry nothing else comes to mind, hopefully someone else will chime in.

None of the fish are munching on them right? You have some angels right?

    Yes saltwater from DT.

No fish are picking at them. The only thing that even comes to mind is there was some hair algae around the rock the coral came on. Tangs picked it clean but never touched the coral. Would you recommend I move the coral lower in the tank and keep the high flow on it? Possibly too much light?
