Don't they sell those x10 at radio shack?

Also do they still operate if your computer is shut down? I have a laptop, what happens if i need to take it some where?

I like the price for this option.

Yes you can probably get this at radio shack. From what I believe the computer is essential to run the programing. When its time for the lights to turn on the computer sends a signal to turn them on. No computer, No signal. They sell remote devices but they only go as far as turning something off and on.

I am not very knowlagable on this stuff. I'm just starting to read up on it.

Another problem with x-10 is false signals. X-10 works thru your current AC line. Any odd line noise can trigger the X-19 to fire on or off regardless of what the software says at the time. FWIW, theres other home automation makers out there with much better systems. Look for one that has a current/load sensor, or a fail safe. Lutron has a nice system IIRC that detects is the unit is on or off.

Thanks for the info Gresham. I have heard of some problems with comunication. I guess x-10 just came out with a new system that has a ton of bugs. I'm going to wait for now because I don't really need to much automation.
