Red Slime algae

We have a 700 gal, coral tank. we have been getting very good growth on the hard corals & the soft corals
the tank is over 18 months old and consistent in its parameters
we are using polybio pads, chem pure carbon & Seachem Purigen as part of the chemical filtration
we have dual skimmers, 40 watt UV light and a range of filtration pads up to as small as 25 micron
we are using 9 ecotech Pro LED lights & feeding is kept to a minimum

For some reason we have just gotten 3 small patches of Red Slime Algae
I have treated the tank 3 times with Ultralife Red Slime remover. the RS will minimize & then come back in the exact same places
but even though Ultralife says it is coral safe, I am seeing my Joshua tree react badly to it & some of my zoo's have closed up

any suggestions??

 

Siphon out as much red slime as possible and increase flow in the area.

 

What are your phosphates at?

 

phosphates usually run around 0.12

That is a set of tests to be proud of. What are you using for testing?

 

Do you have pics of this tank on here somewhere?? My .02 is it's flow.

 

If it's just a few small patches I would stop putting red slime remover in your tank. Siphon it out and change/increase flow in those areas. Since its not an outbreak of cyano I would think manual removal and time will take care of it in due time.

 

^^^+1,red slime remover products usually induce the breeding of bacteria that can work as a temp. fix but usually (as in your case ) the slime will return unless other measures are taken.They can also cause other problems such as low O2 and or a bacterial imbalance.

 

I use a company in the USA called AWT every 6 weeks. the litmus paper test kits are unreliable. they are OK as a bench mark but when you see the difference in the readings between the 2, it really shows it up

i just received 2 more Tunze 6095's & I'll focus these specifically at these areas to see if we get a difference

I should have also mentioned that the water in the tank is moving
I have 2 x Tunze large wave makers
2 x Tunze 6155
1 x 5hp digital pool pump running at a minimum of 30 gal/ min for the sump & filtration
1 x 5hp digital pool pump for circulation requirements in a closed loop system. this is at 18 gal/ min
both pool pumps are directed through a total of 10 jets we put in the system & the water exits through 6 skimmer/ strainers at the top

but I am willing to try focusing a little more juice to those areas as the RS is growing on hard corals, so they would at least like the extra flow
