A New Zealand scientist known for his work on giant squids is currently attempting to break his own record, a world record, for keeping deep-sea squid in captivity. In 2000 he kept them alive for 150 days! Dr. Steve O'Shea has been rearing broad squid, Sepioteuthis australis, at an incredible success rate of 95%. Incredible as the hatchings are 3mm long and eat 10 varieties of food and only live food for the first 120 days. He hopes to one day be the first to raise a giant squid in captivity. Somebody call the Tang Police.

O'Shea obtained the squid eggs from seaweed in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland.

Yes those are his squid in that camera. The world record attempt is being filmed as well and a documentary will follow.

Wow....If I'm diving and run into a bunch of sharks, it wouldn't phase me. However, if I ran into a group of Humboldt Squid, I would be terrified. I can't even imagine a giant squid.

Yep. They aren't called red devils for nothing. They hunt cooperatively in groups. They even attack marine biologists who are researching them.

One of the biologists studying them made a huge armored suit to wear.
