I'm lucky to be in education for many reasons with one being a good portion of summer off. I have wanted to paint my kitchen cabinets for some time. Our large dog recently started a small fire on the stove and luckily smoke detectors worked and could have been so much worse but since there is a charred cabinet, this is a good time.

I know there are many extremely handy people on here and I believe Vinny is a painter. :) anyway, the sides of the cabinets are obviously laminate - it appears just on the framing part. So, do I remove that and paint over that on the board? It's peeling in a couple of spots.

So, hopefully there can be some carpenters on here to help me with the project in addition to reefing needs :)

please ignore the clutter :) I'm not sure what pictures were needed. It's a lot of cabinets :( DSCN3297.JPG DSCN3298.JPG DSCN3297.JPG DSCN3299.JPG all of the outer edges of the cabinet line appear to be laminate.

good information but my laminate is not in good condition, so do I take it off? I have been doing some reading on the basic steps. I've painted quite a few things through all my moves and living quarters. I'm almost wondering if it would be better to pay someone to do it? I think there's some higher satisfaction with something you've done yourself :)

or is how I read the article, I should try to match the laminate shade and put new laminate on?

You can try to reglue the laminate but first try heating it up with a hair dryer. This may reactivate the contact cement.

Why don't you prime and paint the cabinets either white or black? You could possibly glue that bubbled piece back down with a construction adhesive or gorilla glue if heating it up didn't work. You would want to sand off the burnt part of the cabinet before priming and you would want to do a light sanding on all surfaces to make sure the primer sticks. One of our homes had white cabinets which I really liked.

EDIT: I'm not a carpenter. I have just tried my best to make the two houses I've owned look nice on a budget :)

ok, I will try that. Now, if it's kind of torn (it is in a couple of spots) and regluing will leave some areas bare, is it still best to paint over the laminate? or will that show through?

I am going to paint them (I'm wanting to match the light grayish color in the checkered back splash) so they will be much lighter. We get very little light in the kitchen so painting them the whitish/gray is the plan :)
