no im pretty sure its not your tank. its the actual clam that carries the disease that brings on the pinched mantle. sorry to hear this news.

No, you shouldn't have any issues from that clam to spread to others you get.

That is unfortunate, but it does happen regarding pinched mantle.

FWIW, one of my newer maximas had what appeared to be pinched mantle long before I bought it at the LFS. the fish dude there did a fresh water soak 9how long I don''t know) and it immediately looked better and was back to 1005 in a week or 2. I bought that clam a few weeks after that and has been doing great in my tank for about a month and a half or so.

Well I'm planning on getting another clam in about 1 month or so, I just wanted to know if I get another clam will the pinched mantle disease still be in my tank & infect my new clam? Also what are good clams for beginners? And where can I read all about clams.

Sorry to hear about this. It's amazing how fast clams can deteriorate after having shown dubious signs of problems (or no signs at all in some circumstances).

In terms of good beginner clams, I'd probably recommend a squamosa or derasa clam to start rather than a crocea or maxima. They have fewer lighting requirements, and are happy on the sand (so less chance of them falling and damaging themselves while trying to find a good position). The only thing to note is that both of these types of clams can grow pretty large (up to 18" in some cases), so plan for lots of space for them.

Good luck with the next one!

Read this kinda late but ill still respond

Before you should have considered doing a fresh water dip or even thought it had pinched mantle you should have gotten the test kits needed to accurately test your water. dkh and Alk are the same thing, the values are just given differently. Testing Alk/dkh is high prority in a reef tank where you are going to keep calcafying organisms. Ca, Alk and Mg all work together and if any of these three are out of balance they could have caused the symptoms your clam was showing. I would suggest getting good Ca, Alk and Mg test kits and make sure your water is at or very close to natural sea water levels before trying another clam.

It may have been PM but low and high Alk levels can cause a clam to do the exact same thing

If it did have the protozoan that causes PM any new clam added after this could also become infected. The full life cycle of the protozoan is not known and it is also not known what other carriers the protozoan could live on. I would wait at least 6 months before trying another clam.

The chance that it could spread is pretty low. I had PM (for sure)on one maxima and it affected none of my other clams I had in my tank. The bottom line is that not a lot is known about PM. If you wait a month even I bet any chance of PM infecting another clam is pretty much nil.

As far as easiest clams to keep, I would say derasa and squamosa as well. Gigas are easy too, but more $$ usually and harder to get. Now I personally have seen a derasa around 2 feet long in the wild.

How can you say that with out knowing the full life cycle or any other possible hosts?

I had it on one also and it eventually killed 12 out of a 25 clam collection.

How can you say this? Do you even know the name of the protozoan that causes it? I do and i actually have the full report from the PM study sitting right in front of me.

I am reporting from my personal experience. YMMV

How about you post the full report in another thread and inform us, instead of arguing blindly?
