Congrats to 3reefer anpgp - you have won the Mystery Coral Contest! Others were more mysterious but the strength of your follow up with tips on keeping the dendros thriving tipped it in your favor. Great job! You have one a par 38 CREE LED lamp from OC Reef! We had many entries in this contest, thanks to all for playing.

    Dendros
    Scientific Name: dendrophyllia
    Lighting: N/A (they are non-photosynthetic)
    Flow: moderate

My care notes: First off, these guys need to be target fed in order to survive since they are non-photosynthetic. They will readily accept any meaty foods. I like to feed mine either frozen mysis or some Rod’s food. As a treat, I’ll give them a few live brine shrimp. They are decently sticky and have a moderate sting so they quickly grab a hold of and subdue the little shrimp. In order to achieve a good full extension during the day, be sure to only feed them during the day. I’ve noticed that if I feed them during the night, then they typically don’t open as full for that day. As far as flow, mine have been placed in low, moderate, and high flow areas. The greatest extension was noticed under moderate flow, enough to get them swaying nicely. As with any other coral, keeping your levels stable, frequent water changes, and every other good husbandry practice is a good idea. All in all, they are a pretty hardy coral, mine survived my tank breakdown, 17-18 hour drive to my new place, and then the setup of the new tank. Their color is amazing and unlike any other coral I’ve seen or owned.
