My ornamental gold fish pond..

or puddle... it's 10' x 12'...24' deep in the deep part with a 12" deep margin for my plants.. Plants include lilies, arrow of arum and penny wart.. the filtration is DIY consisting a 12" square box ( planter) pea gravel 600GPH mag drive pump wrapped in coarse scotch brite.. it exits out of a fairy with pet frog spitter... it's been functioning for 5 years.. a second pump that sits on the ,margin feeds a 5 gallon sump that over flows to a cascading water fall.. in the winter, a 1500 Watt heater keeps the pond from freezing when the water temp goes below 32F... a "thermo cube" shuts power to the heater when the air temp rises above 32.. the redundancy protects against boiled fish... I have a hose shaped "screen house" cover ( I don't have a picture today) that protects it from leaves and snow in winter.. 2 2' lengths of 4" PVC housed in the bottom of the pond provide shelter for the fish and frogs when the plants have died back for the winter or when birds or raccoons( or the neighbors kids) decide to go fishing.. it was stocked with "feeder" gold fish some have spawned my guess is there are about 20 of them there now... sorry for the :dirty" appearance.. I took these pictures during a Nor'easter that left pine needles everywhere.. I promise to post some "prettier " pictures another time..

24 foot deep, that's a cave! Lol. Looks really good, me and the wife want to do something like that when we buy a house.

Hows the maintenance on something like this? Is the cost reasonable to run? I have an enclosed back yard and thought about something along these lines.

My dad bought a house with pond. Hadn't been maintained in 2 years. Previous owners said they never touched it but did have goldfish at one point. I went to look at it and didn't have any water. Was full of weeds and looked like marsh. Marsh was wet but no water like a pond for fish to swim.
I started pulling weed and holy sh&t there were still fish in it. They can't swim in and hadn't been fed in years. I pulled 12 golfmdfish out!!! Whoa

 

Cheaper than any one of my aquariums.... I don't add any chemicals or buy any products...most of the work ientails keeping the leaves out and the plants pruned... all the plants have been there for years, in the fall, I prune them back and put them in the deep water, take the filter and move it to the margin and remove the hose and make it a fountain, by doing this, I do not circulate the water from the deep and mix it with the colder shallow water, it keeps the nitrifying bacteria alive ( although dormant below 50 degrees F).. the initial expense was cheap... I think I paid about $50 for the liner... less than a 5 gallon bucket of reef crystals!

 

Very nice job. I wasn't aware they could live in such cold temps!
