My live sand has black patches in it. Could someone tell me if this is bad? I took pictures 4-5 days ago and it wasn't there.

It looks like cyano.increase nutrient export and do not overfeed as it feeds on nutrients.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Try to increase flow as well, Cyanobacteria prefers areas of lower oxygenation.

    Welcome to 3reef. :)

    Welcome.

    Agree with both replies.

Also, if you can, vacuum it out while removing water for a water change. That usually helps with nutrient control as dying cyano releases phosphates back into the water.

My kid fed my fish a few weeks ago, he put a tiny handful of pellets, 100s, in my tank whereas I put in a pinch of about 10 pellets. So I am feeling your pain with this eye sore you are dealing with. All the above mentioned I agree with. Diligent manual removal is probably one of your best things to fight this with.

are you running a sump? a lot of nutrient issues can be resolved with a thriving refugium picking up those nutrients.
