My new 65G build is coming along nicely, it is almost cycled and I will be transferring my live stock over next weekend. I have a red slime algae problem in my old tank due to the other tanks poor flow and non-sump design. I only want to move my fish and sifting star over, as the remaining corals will be sold. My question, how to I keep the contamination out of my new tank?

Ah, well weekly water changes will help. Not overstocking your tank with fish, limited feedings, quality skimmer etc. will help keep the nutrients that fuel those algae, low.

You have to have a way of exporting nutrients ..I personally use an algae scrubber ..

I got new dry sand (oolite) and dry rock(BRS reefsaver) that was seeded with biospira. I am attempting to start from scratch so I have a much lower chance of getting pests from live rock and gunk from my old tank.

Basically only the fish and the sand sifting star will be moved over. I have had the fish over 5 years so I am attached =D

Don't panic if you get diatoms right away from the new rock and sand. Just eating the silicates. It will go away.

The ss star will starve if you have an immature sandbed.I would try to rehome it. If you add nutrients you will inevitably see red slime.

+1 the sand star will cause you more problems in the long run if it lives. That's a creature that should be left in the ocean imo. As long as your transferring livestock and not rock or sand I wouldn't worry about bringing red slime over however if you don't have efficient means to export nutrients you'll grow red slime again and again.
