I would not dip the fish if I were you. Dipping the fish will do nothing to kill the Ich that is in your system and will probably just stress the fish to the point were they will die from it. Stressing out a sick fish is the last thing you want to do. What size tank is this? Heres is a great link to some good info about Ich.

just an update for every1, well i did the dip for 10mins in bottled water, i no you said 5mins but he seemed fine and was swiming around like normal. read something on the net about white spot falling off the fish? well that never happended?

then few hours later thort id try it again as he didnt seem stressed as much as i thort he would, so did it in tap water this time i treated before. and put him in for 20mins

hes bac in his home now all seems well.

fingers crossed all goes well :)

in response to doctor evil..... lol

iv had ich before and everyone says different stuff, all my fish died last time part from the cleaner wasse, i did everything but fresh water dip. this included treatment that the LFS said would work, garlic daily, lowering ph, raising temp. all fish were feeding, then every day one fish would die

so trying something different this time, as i said before iv got a uv sterilzer too, thort that would kill everything buut learnt today its just the free swiming larva that it kills

Also, it takes a MASSIVE UV sterilizer to kill ich. How many watts is the sterilizer? What size tank do you have?

i do not agree with above....it does not take a massive uv to kill ich that passes threw and past the light it takes the right flow. most of the better uv's recommend different pump sizes for what you want from the uv

IMO i also believe this works since i have done it. you won't see the marks on the fish go away till about a day.
yes you are throwing a fish back into a tank that still has ich, but you are removing ich from its gills and giving the fish a chance to fight it with its own immune system. its why the selcon and good quality water is so important.

+1 Also, it dosn't entirely matter what the flow rate is or the power of the UV. Not all ich is in the water column, and mathematically not everything in the water will pass through the UV anyways. Increasing the flow and power will help, but never 100% and the rate of reproduction can still be higher than the rate of sterilization. And without a massive unit, the kill rate isn't close to 100% regardless of manufactures claims, even for the water that does pass through. Even with a massive unit it may not be 100% . The only effective way to treat ich and really eliminate it is to qt and treat with copper or hyposalinity.

agreed, only the ich that passes past the light will be effected by the light. but it does help with lowering the numbers and giving the fish a fighting chance. uv is also said to help with a fishes immune system, which also helps fight ich.

i use a uv i totally believe its one of the reasons why my fish are healthy
