OK, so I went home for the week, and when I came back the tank that I am setting up was covered in this brownish, almost crystalline hair looking thing. Some of them have white spots on the tips..

I also saw that one of my SPS coral was completely dead. I only have the skeleton of it at this point. Everything else, ( the zoas and the mushrooms seem to be doing really good. They are really open and good looking).

I suspected it could be phosphates, but the test came back with a 0. Ill post pics in a second.

Sorry for the many posts. I'm doing this over my phone because I can't get to a computer right now.

I only have a few snails in the tank and 2 cleaner shrimp. I also have my skimmer running 24/7. I feed my shrimp half a cube of emerald once a week. (should I reduce?).

I have not tested for nitrates yet, but as of last week they were 0. And since I did not feed I'm not sure how they would have increased.. But I will test just to make sure. I'll post the results around 7pm eastern for those.
I also suspect maybe silicates? I have the water from my RO in a rain barrel I bought from lowes. Could that be the culprit? If so how can I get rid of them? Or test for them? And lastly, can silicates kill SPS??

I should mention that there was no trace of this thing growing before I left, at least not that I noticed and now it's pretty much everywhere.
Any ideas as to what I should do?

what light do you have? what salt do you use? what type of corals do you have? what are your water parameters? test them and post up.

I use instant ocean, I only have 3 mushrooms, and 3 small zoanthid colonies.

I wil post the other parameters later on today, I was only able to test for phosphates and they came as 0.

yea age of system, pramas, light?? and the corals you listed are not SPS corals. you should get reef crystals not instant ocean. Better for corals unless you dose. You can get it from drsfosterandsmith.com for 53$ shipped for 200gal box.

I know they aren't SPS, I had one acro in there that died. The ones listed are the ones I currently have.
I have metal halides of with 2 150W bulbs and 2 T5HO blue supplemental lightning. They turn on at 9am and off at 8pm I already have instant ocean for at least 300g, I rather use that up first before considering switching.

Since I barely have any corals there is no need to dose right now. My tank is about 3-4 months old.

do you use ro water if not you may want to add one to your wish list, i would back off on the lighting time 11 hours is a long time for mh lighting imo, and add a clean up crew snails would be a good place to start i like 1 per gal of water. io salt is find, i've been using it for over 20 years with no problems, i hope this helps.

+1 to reducing lighting time. My halides only go for 6 hours and T5HO's for 8.
