The next time you get the urge to buy a coral, get a test kit instead. The reef master test kit probably cost as much as your elegance. I strongly recommend getting test kits. Not only will you know yourself and for sure, it will help you understand the hobby better. I've heard "my levels are in check" before.

My thoughts exactly. There "in check" may be parameters for mushrooms and xenia not sps's and elegances.

Gotcha, thanks guys. I know it would be a wise investment but a test kit doesnt look pretty in my tank... Next time I had to LFS Ill have to pick up a kit.

And by the way does any one else feel like there is only about 4 people on right now

Patience young one. We do indeed have lives other than stalking people on a forum. How do you think we have the money to do these kinds of things to fishies? Well, some of us don't...but anyways...

A test kit is well worth it. It's always better to know what you're waters like before your animals tell you there's something wrong. Which can lead to death. Badness all over that.

I'm not sure what your idea of a test kit is, but mine doesn't go in my tank. It's just a bunch of chemicals that can do nasty things to my body, and some vials or test tubes. But the tank water in the tube, add the various testing chemicals, and compare the color to the chart. There's also some fancy schmancy digital readers...but it builds character to do it the Science Class way.:scholar::freak3:

I have a elegance in my 46 gallon. You need to keep them on the sand which is important. I have 2 150 watt DE Mh bulbs and he is doing great. Make sure your Elegance can not come into contact with any rock or anything. Also I have the foot of it in a 1 inch high round piece of pvc for support. My clownfish lives in him and it does not bother the elegance. Any questions email me

Just curious why you have a canister filter for a reef tank? As long as you have no nitrate I guess its good but usually they trap nitrate. I have a API test kitand to be honest its not the best and I dont belive its that accurate.

The austrailian elegance lasts very well in the home aquarium. They are extremely hardy. The indonesian ones are the ones that are dying in the home aquarium, seemingly impossible to keep. If you look at your elegance disk and you see straight lines then you have an australian one and i'll bet it does great in your system. If the lines on the disk aren't straight it is indonesian and will be very hard if not impossible at this point to keep alive.

You can get the basic test kit at Petsmart for $25 jftr. It's an API, and they work fine. Sure, it's not a Salifert or Elos but it will work.

the red sea test kits arent bad either, and most reef master kits are around $35, an elegance probably cost you $60-100. I was looking at adding an elegance to my tank as a centerpiece but actually decided against it cause I dont want a coral that is that touchy, I still like taking vacations every now and again and I dont trust others to keep one alive
