I think mine is pooping it like spits out brown colored stuff. If it is poo is it a good thing or do they do that even if they aren't happy? I just got them about 2 weeks ago. Have been spot feeding them everyday with phytoplankton.

Often it will spit out a ball of debirs and that is not poop. the poop as a tubing form, not a ball of crap.

Do you have sand blowing around at all in your tank? Thinking it could be your clams way of removing particles from its mantle.

Well if you stop target feeding it will definitely starve to death.

The reason that they keep mentioning the particle size ranges is that, in the simplest terms, the smaller the particles, the more likely they are to be captured by these animals. For example, (Tamburri and Zimmer-Faust 1996) have shown that ingestion of unflavored plastic beads of the same particle size as phytoplankton (< 40 mm) are eaten at the same rate as are real phytoplankton. However, it is not simply the correct size range of these particles that is attractive to the animals: the scent of phytoplankton also appears to be a feeding stimulant for most bivalves tested to date.

You could also try Zooplankton. In the past food within the desired size range of these animals was very hard to come by. It is much easier to aquire now but these scallops have a dreadfull survival rate and only live a few years in the ocean so I would suggest steering clear of them in the future.:(

Thanks for all the responses. I probably so have sand kick up every now and then from when my snails fall off the glass and try to flip back over lol. Do scallops remove particles from 2 tube looking things inside it's shell? It looks like it has 2 tubes one on either side and stuff is occasionally coming out of it which is why I was wondering if it was poop.

I will try the zooplankton as well and see which they like better. They seem to be doing good on the phyto. They get all excited when I feed also.

Those are the siphon tubes of your clam. It's drawing water in one and out the other.

to answer your question, every single organism on earth must expel waste.
