Ocellaris clowns are "false" perculas, "true" perculas are just that, percula clowns. If someone says an ocellaris is a percula, meaning "true" percula, then they are incorrect in labeling the fish.

Thanks for that bit of info! I have 2 b&w clowns and they both do this to each other and I always wondered why the heck they did that. They both are in a 10gal QT tank so thought it was just a space issue. I've noticed recently though that they don't do it as frequently, so maybe ones almost beaten into SUBMISSION! Haha, good to know now.

So when they stop doing that, does that mean the sex has been determined and they'll be a mated pair now?

This is him trying to pair off with the larger more dominant fish which will eventually sex as a female. Both clowns will engage in this courting dance but the smaller does it more frequently in an act of submission.

The act is to show they are a good mate, the action resembles fertilising eggs. This shows they have yet to pair off though it does happen even when they have paired its alot rarer and instead they may shoot up and down the tank as a mating dance.

The larger fish will bully the smaller, the loss of colour is stress, make sure the smaller fish gets plenty of food as the larger fish will restirct the food amounts the smaller will get to ensure they stay the dominant one.

Fin colour loss could also be from excessive biting but overall nothing to worry about.

    good luck ;D

    Ocellaris and Percula difference

This is often a mistaken mislabelling as they look so similar, mostly now A.Ocellaris are not called false perculas to avoid the confusion. They are called Ocellaris or common clowns. Even then they may be mislabelled as many people in the shops dont know the difference..

    1. Ocellaris have 11 dorsal spines whilst a Percula have 10.
    2. Perculas have a thick black colouration either side of the white band whilst the Ocellaris have a thin line. (with interbreeding and designer species its impossible to tell)
    3. Ocellaris have grey irises whilst Percula have orange irises which make the eyes look small.
There is a difference in facial shape but thats confusing :)

With such marginal differences its understandable why people get confused ;D
