    Hello everyone,

My girlfriend and I are thinking about getting a nicer camera since we only currently have a sony cybershot (point and shoot). We were looking at the SLR cameras, and were overwhelmed by all the info out there about them.

This is where I am turning to the trusted 3reef community. For all of you that have amazing macro shots (and you know who you are ;D) what kind of camera and lenses do you recommend?

We are very new to photography so would like a beginner friendly camera, but still would like to take amazing photos of the tank, as well as be able to change lenses to take action photos and landscape photos.

Thanks for you input in advance and I hope to hear some helpful insights.

    Robert

I plan on getting a Nikon D90. I've read great reviews of that camera. And that's all I know! :) Good luck in your search!

+1! any and all the nikons are great.

I am by no means a camera expert, but to get those amazing shots you will need to purchase a macro lens or else a spacer for the stock lens. Also a lot is determined on your ability to adjust the white balance to bring out those special colors.

This could get interesting. I've posted threads about camera's and haven't really got anywhere. A sony cybershot isn't a bad camera. I would google for the best digital camera for aquariums and see what happens. I have a Sony CX500 Camcorder that is really good. Check this out.

I shoot with a Canon 1D Mark II and 5D Mark II. I used to shoot with Nikon for 15 years but switched to Canon in 2004. Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ has great info on all the cameras on the market. Canon gives more features in their cameras than Nikon generally. But at the end of the day, it's really the person that uses the camera that makes great photos, not the camera.

Have you considered taking a photography course, or buying some books on the topic? I know some people with top of the line equipment that still take some run of the mill pictures.

I also know some people who can take amazing pics with older digital cameras that lack the features that today's ones have.

If you are a total noobie to photography, I just think that money invested in learning how to take pictures is better spent than just buying the most expensive camera you can find.

Thats a great looking video of your tank! I know the cybershot is a pretty good point and shoot, but I want to get more into the macro shots and really be able to get some nice shots of polyp extension and stuff.

Is the Sony CX500 also a digital camera?
