My wife tells me today that she wants to start breeding clownfish, but not just any clownfish. She wants to breed "Black Ice" Clownfish. These fish start at around $170 a piece lol. She is already started doing all the research to start breeding these fish and has learned a great deal actually. I think we are going to buy some of the tanks for the "grow out" setup today at Petco since they are having their $1 a gallon sell right now.

My question is, what thoughts do you all have about this? Also, do you all think there is much of a market out there still for clownfish? She is very interested, so this means that we will most likely be getting this thing off the ground here within the next few months!

This would be her project mainly and I'm very excited for her. So much to learn for both of us.

I'm not sure about the black ice genetics. Most likely breeding two black ice OCs will give you a lot of normal ocs, perhaps with some black ice ocs and other variations mixed in. I don't know, but I doubt it's a dominant gene or they would be a lot cheaper. However, it can easily take a pair of ocs 3 or 4 years before they start producing offspring. And really, breeding is pretty difficult to begin with, so, you'll want to do a lot of reading. It might be fun to try, but it's unlikely that you'll make your money back with a small scale breeding program to be honest.

That is a good point about the genetics. I haven't thought of that yet. I think it is more something my wife is just wanting to try for now to see how she likes it. Not really to worried about making money off of it unless we get lucky lol.

Realize this won't be a short ordeal, it will probably take 2 years assuming you don't get a breeding pair. The clown fish start off unsexed then transform into there genders.

That is about the time line we are looking at. We realize that could take up to a year for the clowns to be "happy" enough in their new home (when we finally get them) and we will go from there. We were thinking of getting the setup done first, then when we get our tax returns buying the fish then. I have to go to Korea for a year anyways starting next June, so we are hoping by June of 2013 that they will be ready lol.
