So my dad got me an anemone a few days ago and everyday it's been shrinking at night and has its mouth open. When I wake up it has puffed back up but I can't always tell if it's mouth is closed because usually my fish are in the way. So how do you think it looks.

I'll try to get its mouth when my fish moves.

Most likely it's just expelling waste at night. Inflating and deflating is normal behavior. It's a plus that it already hosted your clown fish. Feed it once a week with food no bigger than its mouth, it will be fine. Nice anemone by the way.

I'm told my parents about feeding them but always say I don't need to.

Here's a better look. Also should I be able to see it eating?

Im in agreement with your parents on the feeding, an occasional prey (it will usually catch bits of food that float on it, as you have shown) are more than enough IMO. dsc is right about the inflating/deflating this is absolutely normal especially when introduced to a new system.

the coloration is pretty good too, how old is your system?

I would start to worry if you see it "bleaching" having its mouth constantly open, and if it no longer has the strength to firmly grip the rock its on…. but thus far she seems like a healthy little thing, good score!

why wouldn't you be able to see it eat? its all about timing. the mouth doesn't look tightly closed but again this could be due to acclimatization or because it just ate, or because it just pooped. its not forcibly a bad sign...

Thanks. My system is about two or three years old. I didn't know if you should see them eat because I've watched videos of them eating and they close up.

Sometimes the fish that's being hosted will feed the anemone with food you feed the tank. In an older tank we had a RBTA that hosted a large gold band maroon clown and anything I threw in the tank as far as food was spit in the nem. It was neat to experience the symbiotic relationship.

iv witnessed the same with my percula, very cool to watch indeed.

well it seems your tank is mature enough time wise, but we forgot to ask you the other determining factor for a nems health....your lights.... what are you using?
