I just got my first sps a while back, it seems to be liking the lights so far! All of my corals were till this crap started, now my torch is barely out.

Well, a humble thanks, I'm pretty much still a neubie too!

    I don't run GFO- haven't yet anyway.
I have and do use a small amount of PhosGuard- in a media/mesh bag in my intank overflow- seems to help a little.

Just keep trying basic things, many ways to have success.
    Stay with it.
Early on a had a lot of cyano- took awhile to rid.- I had very few coral then. It seems that it hits the newer tanks more than the more established ones- but obviously not always the case.

after this outbreak, I'll take cyano any day lol. I'm definitely going to attempt to go back to chaeto and a fuge. Maybe even an upgrade to my 55 for a 90 with a nice big sump for macro.

I have chaeto & about 30lbs of LR in my sump.. Lights out project starts tomorrow. I'm assuming the sump light is off too during this?

i guess we'll keep each other updated with the situation lol. I started my lights out today and i'm going to continue running my sump light at the 12 hours cycles since i didn't notice any of this garbage down there. idk, i might be wrong leaving the sump light on it's cycles. Would love to grow out the chaeto to try and help with the situation.

Those are dinos. I had a Dino outbreak a few weeks ago. I'm not sure what or if any one thing helped but I did increase my alk about 1.5 units, Mag was a little low I have it higher now. Calcium was low. Probably more importantly I doubled up on the GFO and clocked in for some serious tooth brushing on the rocks. This week the dino started to creep back in one corner and I'm getting the filamentas type clear brown algae but not the rust sludge.. I slacked up on my GFO and PO4 got up to .05 so I just replaced and we will see if that makes a difference. I'm still getting to know a new tank.. about 2-3 months. Guess I'll be replacing my GFO more often. My refugium is not very mature either.. a little chaeto but not growing a whole lot.
I hear the blackout thing works for some and come right back for others..
Worth a try but at the same time focus on the nutrients.
By the way dinos can kill snails but if that happens wait a couple of weeks before throwing any snails out. I thought mine were dead but they just kind of didn't move for a very long time. They can sit upside down for days/weeks and come back to life.

Interesting point on the snails...I threw some phosguard back into my system to try and soak up some of the phosphates. I hope that stripping the water of phosphates doesn't bleach my SPS. If that starts to happen, i'm just going to start fresh and clean the rock. Glad to hear that you got your outbreak under control.

Strange.. This crap is not as bad this am. I can tell by my Xenia's are not covered in it. There are still some strands hanging of my LR, but nothing like it has been. I may hold off on the lights out project and see what happens over the next couple days. A good cleaning and water changes so far and maybe its working.

That's good, hopefully the cleaning takes the rest in your tank. I'm going to keep my lights off and resist turning them on until saturday in hopes that every bit of this garbage dies off. I'm running about cup of Rox carbon as well to absorb any toxins. That's about 2/3 cup more than what I usually run. And a bit of phosguard just to soak up a bit of phosphates and not irritate any coral.

I turned my lights onto just moonlights when I got home and will go full balackout once I do a water change tonight, it seemed to be dying off a bit already so I'm hoping that this takes care of it! I'm going to try boosting the alk too.
