Algae ID

Tank is doing great. But noticed a few rocks looking a little fuzzy. I run carbon and biopellets.


Anyone know what kinda algae this is and what would eat it?

 

Not sure what it is called but my lawnmower blenny eats it when it grows in my tank. I would think any bristle tooth fish would eat it. It may be too much for snails to handle. Maybe hermits but i don't know, I don't keep crabs in my tank.

 

Either hair or cyano I am thinking.

 

I have had plenty of Cyano and that doesn't look like cyano if i am looking at the same thing you are referring to. It looks basically like hair algae. If it is Cyano, I have found no creature that will eat it and only diligent manual removal and maintenance are your best shot.

With most any algae, decreasing nutrient import & increasing nutrient export will provide the best chance for long-term success. Only feed what your fish can eat in 2 - 3 minutes; increase the amount of carbon and change it more frequently; increase the size and frequency of water changes, and vaccuum out as much algae as possible while removing water for the change; you may also want to skim a little wetter if possible. Just remember, patience is a virtue; it may take a little time to completely eradicate the algae. OTOH, time is on your side, as the algae is feeding on the excess nutrients that would otherwise cause water quality issues.

 

Kind of looks like Chrysophytes. Biopellets might be contributing to it, might want to re-think biopellet use, or research before taking any action.

Ugh. Ok so alk was at 5.5 a few weeks ago. Started using baking soda to get it up. Now its up to about 8.5. Drops .3 every day.

But since i started bringing alk uo this stuff started taking off.

Here is a better pic today its gotten much worse in justva few days.

My tank was gorgeous but some of sps were losing color figured from low alk. But now this algae is ruining it. Really need a solid ID on this so I can fix it.

 

What nutrient export do you have?

 

tunze 9001 skimmer. Wich I hate. So hard to get it to skim right. Either super wet(like it overflows in a day) or super dry where it takes like weeks to fill.
And I do weekly 5gal water changes. On 30gal system thats what like over 15% wc.
