Definitely a good search function. There's lots of places on the interweb to find this info, but I have not found one central resource yet that has a good search function.

in addition to a good search bar, maybe even a cumulative tag cloud search function

basically, this is where every critter that gets cataloged, has series of tags applied to it. Then one could start their search by clicking on a tag. viewing results, then click another tag to further filter the results. So for instance, if you click a series of tags such as: "light brown, 12 legs, antenna, small", that might show results for munnid isopod:

I just had to bookmark this page. Thank you for taking the time to get such amazing pictures (I'm assuming from the write up you took them all). The Polychaete (tube worm) was one I thought I'd end up adding to your list, but you beat me to it. : ) Thanks for the great close ups.

I like your idea better. It would be easier to find exactly what you're looking for, even if you have almost no idea what you have

If they have a name on them, they belong to that person. The ones without a name are me. It was once what I considered my "Bug Stamp Collection", but I realized it would serve people better if I included other's pics. I just PM'd almost 100 peeps to see if they would like to contribute and everyone has been awesome.

I really like the idea of the search feature. Hope we can pull it together. I sense this could be awesome.

I don't understand the cumulative tag cloud. I can't figure out twitter either. Now, that doesn't mean I don't like the idea, but I really don't understand it.

Not really. More like if you were to tag a Youtube video on lionfish, you would tag "lionfish", "predator tank", "Renee & Greg", "Lionfish Lair", etc.

Then when anyone searches for any of these terms, your video shows up ;)

So in this case, you would tag a snail with say its color, "snail", "slow mover", "siphon tube", "fast (or slow)", etc.

So then you could search for a slow moving red snail, or a fast moving snail with a siphon.

    Hope that helps!

    Yes, yes it does.

Can you push me in the direction of how one may accomplish this :)

ya sort of. But more like guided search with pre-defined search terms.

here's an example of a site I built for a client that uses something similar to this idea to search for artwork. Search Art » The Art of Hilario -

You can start with as many or few selected tags as you like an add or take away tags as you refine your search

Here's another example of a site that uses a true tag cloud to search for fonts. The larger the tag, the more important the tag is by the number of items that use the tag.

Most CMS's (content management systems) can handle this sort of this these days. CMS's such as WorPress, Dupra, Blogger, etc....

I personally like WordPress, but there are many capable CMS systems out there.
