My daughter and grandkids recently moved into a rented house that included a freshwater tank left behind by the landlord. The tank was very dirty, filled with stagnent water(filter wasn't running),but still contained four fish which seemed fine.I did about a 90% water change, cleaned the Aquaclear filter replacing all of the media and a week later the tank looked pretty good, fish were fine.So I let my grandaughter pick out some new fish and she chose two feeder goldfish,a betta, and a cory cat.A few days later everything is dead.I didn't see any of the fish myself but my daughter tells me that their fins looked torn up so I'm thinking maybe fin rot.So....my questions are, should we just leave the tank fallow and for how long? Also, what other measures could/should we take before adding any more fish?

That will smell bad, if you let it fallow. Just empty it and clean it with vinegar.

Tank is 29 gal.,I'd rather not nuke it and recycle if not necessary.
