what is wrong with P's clam?

updated pic that shows the clam's current state.

it seems stabilized and that ugly plastic thing it's in seems to be doing the trick.

Don't let the angle fool you, its mantle barely moves in the current.

 

just thought I chime in on a fewtheorys I discoverd on a diffrent forum same topic.

#1 theory is lighting and possible bleaching that has taken place.

Probably the most important element to consider here is lighting. T. max and T. crocea typically come from highly lit areas. It is recommended using metal halide lighting, and perhaps actinic supplementation, and I happen to agree. I know people who have kept their maximas and croceas under NO, VHO, and power compact fluorescent lighting, but I also know quite a few who have had their clams lose intensity, and in some cases starving to death over the course of 6 months to a year.
Maximas and croceas typically have a higher density of zooxanthellae, and rely heavily on the nutrition provided by the algaes. This may account for the successes of people keeping these species in high light, low plankton (big honkin' skimmer) tank along with SPS corals. Derasa, squamosa, and giga all come from deeper in the ocean, and therefore have less of a light requirement than crocea and maxima"

 

the wording seems to match to a "t". good info.

i now have it way up high very near the surface. it has plateaued and I am waiting for a change in either direction to decide next steps.

 

in a few months in your set up Peredhil that will be purple and thus not so obvious IMO

Hey P...I know this is old. Just wondering how the clam is and if you have any recent pics of it?

 

It doesn't put its foot down... but it darkened back up after a bit. It's been doing great as far as I can tell. No more spots or anything.

I recently moved it from the top of the tank to the middle. At that time I, again, got a few spots on it, but that cleared up after a week.

I'm convinced these spots are nothing more than light acclimation.

 

Has it grown?
