Hi all - Yesterday I received complaints from home about noise from one of my Vortechs. So last night I got to it and cleaned the prop sides on both my Vortechs and remounted them. When I turned them back on, the motor on the offender was still loud, making a gear-filled whirring noise. Cleaning the motor side is new to me. Is this possible? Has anyone restored one?

    Thanks in advance,

    matt

There's no gears, but the bearings can go out in them. If it's aligned properly (I assume you know how to do that), then that's probably your issue. Ecotech will fix them, but there's also DIY instructions out there if you don't mind an intermediate project.

Thanks Hunter - got a link to those instructions? Maybe I can save some time.

I spoke to EcoTech and they were cool - said I could send it in for a rebuild. If it is toast, they would give me a good deal on a new one.

Hmmm...I had the same thing happen a year ago. I bought a new dry side. Nice to know they can be fixed.

Wow what an awesome tutorial. A+ for details and pics.
I love this kind of stuff but I am feeling swamped with a massive boat project I have going on this weekend, not to mention 3reef todo list. I may have to pass this round. :(
Thanks though. That will help somebody. Good to have it here too.

    Update -

I sent my Vortech to EcoTech. They called me this week and told me it was completely shot. Bearing swap would not work. So they are sending me a refurbished newer model for $50. I believe that is the price of the bearings alone no? So maybe I'm coming out ahead. I will say, I've always been impressed with their customer service. They seem well-managed over there.
