Im so sorry for the trouble that your going through Sparky, but I have to agree with Geek. I would never use any kind of chemical to clean anything in my tank. When I clean the pumps, all I use is water and a tooth brush. If I would have known from the start of this thread that you used CLR to clean anything that touches your tank, this thread wouldnt be so long. I think thats your problem(CLR). Luna

You need to read the above again, Luna. You missed the main idea of the post. My problem has been for some time now. As I said, I didn't use CLR until very recently.

Notwithstanding the CLR incident, for whatever it's worth, as I stated above, I'm convinced that CLR leaves nothing behind after it's utilized in a separate container, and RO/DI water is used to rinse the equipment, twice, afterward.

I think people overestimate what parts per million of a substance can do. If you use one cup of CLR in a 5 gallon bucket of water, then remove all water and run the pump in RO/DI water for an hour, then remove all the RO/DI water and add a fresh 5 gallons of new RO/DI water, in my mind there's no chance that any amount remains enough to inflict harm. I could be wrong, and it wouldn't be the first time.

Again, Tangster speaks from experience and nothing I've done that he's said, or has done himself has ever had negative consequences on my tank or its inhabitants. If he says he's been using it for some time, that's good enough for me.

Sorry for your loss it is always sad when this happens

Sounds like xenia death, we had a huge colony die off a few years ago (5) when I went on vacation. Whipped out the complete holding system of corals in 2 weeks even after we removed the xenia. From then on we called Xenia the evil coral. Never carry it now.

I dont know why your getting so defensive as to regards with Tangster. I didnt say anything negative towards him or his methods. As far as reading it again, sorry for mis-diagnosing your problem. I re-track my statement. Luna

What works for one person, doesnt mean it will work for everybody. If you do not have the exact same setup, you will get a totally different result.

CLR is basically an acid, acid eats plastics/rubber. If you soaked a pump that had a weak seal in CLR, well you would lose part of your seal. Ive done that with vinegar. I was cleaning a bunch of things in a bucket and had an old powerhead in the bucket to help agitate things. Several hours later, GFCI tripped on that powerhead.

I respect Tangster, he knows that, me and him have bumped heads on more then a few occasions, lol.

LOL. You kill me, Luna. I'm nobody's cheerleader. My reply was simply a response to you. I assumed you read the information that caused you to write what you did--but you didn't, so it's all a moot point, isn't it. . .

    :)
