Say it ain't so...

Not really sure what this is. Looks like bryopsis, but a couple threads I've read over say it isn't exactly like the bryopsis that is so hated by many reef enthusiasts. Some even claim turbo snails will eat it...WHAT?

Looks like the Bryopsis I had in my tank a few months back. The Kent Mg treatment worked for me, so I recommend it.

 

Because the tank is still cycling, I'm going to let it run its course, then do a Hydrogen peroxide dosing. I found it interesting how some people had the same stuff (its obviously not hair algae) during cycles and it was taken care of by CUC members. hmmm.

I emailed John from reef cleaners to see what he says (his dry rock in the tank).

I'm also curious how I got bryopsis if I got dead rock from Reef cleaners, some left over rock from my old tank, new sand, and water I've used for the past 4 years. Never seen bryopsis before in my tanks, and the LFS were I got the water from doesn't have any either.

 

I used dead rock from my tank 5 years ago, never had Bryopsis before but it sure did sprout everywhere in my tank. I am just plagued by blue/green cyano, but hey, it is better than bubble algae.

 

Why not just slam the tank with Kent Tech Marine Magnesium if the tank is still cycling.

 

Mostly a funds issue. My understanding is I need to buy another mag test kit, but one that doesn't stop at 1600, and the Kent M. Then I need to raise it to 1800-2100 ppm for 1-2 months. Sound expensive. Especially considering I have to order it online. Hydrogen peroxide is $1 for a bottle, and it wont kill my red macro or chaeto if I "spot feed."

I've put hours of research into kent M vs. H2O2, I'm just looking for a 100% positive ID and if anyone else has had this same algae (assuming its not the bryopsis we all think of but a different species) pop up during a cycle.

John would know better, but that does look like hair algae to me as well.
