I was thinking of doing a sump for FW just to get the ugly stuff out of the tank and extra water volume probably wouldn't hurt either.
The tickle filter is a different idea and I like the idea of using bamboo for sucking up the nitrates, though mangroves will grow in FW too.

Usually Cichlids don't eat plants. They are notorious for rearranging their tanks though. This includes tearing up any plants they see fit.

I think you are referring to an algae scrubber.

Yea it was a screen with algea and the water slowly trickled down the algea and people were saying how great it works and how easy it was to setup. I have the thread saved on my computer. I'll post it when I get out class. I think it talks about why not to have a fuge for fw tanks. It's a huge thread of people doing it. Not sure how old it is tho

I've also had tanks where I couldn't keep any plants due to the fish eating them so a fuge would be good in those situations.
My sister just had her new pleco eat one of her plants, a bannana plant (Nymphoides aquatica).

All depends on the cichlid ie. south american vs. african..

And then it breaks down further as to which species from there etc ..

ie. Severums are South American and eat plants where as Cacatoides do not.

99% of all rift/tang Africans will eat or at a minimum graze on plants.

Plecos are another story most don't eat plants but will graze on the algae that forms on the plant damaging the plant if there isn't enough to eat elsewhere. panaques though are a wood eater/rasper that often go for plant over algae.

most plumbed FW tanks are for wet/dry filters. Cichlids will occasionally tear up plants depends on type and species. My lfs has several plumbed FW tanks for cichlids and discus. Bamboo would be cheaper and grows faster = faster export, but other FW plants would probably work better. A FW sump would be best for removing equipment from the DT.

I'm kind of new to this field, and I have question about filtration. I purchased a 125g, had it drilled, and the retailer threw in a wet/dry filter. My question is would I be better off going with a refugium set up instead? I'm going to do a discus tank, btw.
