i wonder if it would be a good idea to mark this as an advanced thread or something.just so newbees realize its not something you can just go and do without a thourough knowledge of chemistry.

It's really not much more advanced than adding any supplements. I posted alot of science behind it, but not everyone needs to know all that. I mean can anyone tell me chemically, or physiologically HOW corals remove Ca ions from the water column and combine it with carbonate ions and lay down skeleton? Or do we just know and take it for granted that "I add calcium and alkalinity because corals use it to grow." That is VASTLY simplified. This subject could be similarly simplified as "I add sugar because it will reduce nitrates in my tank." If you need to know how, it's here. If you don't care then think of the simplified version. I honestly don't get why people are so afraid of this. I feel like I'm in a caveman Lawyer skit. Remember those? Too funny! BUt I honestly respect you senior people trying to protect the newbies, but honestly, you may be doing more harm than good by moving this.

1st off I'm 44 and not a senior YET;D lol and yeah I gotcha! I just think it would be very confusing for someone starting out with their very first tank. Remember how confused you were when you had your first? If you weren't at all then good for you but, I know I was and a lot of the time still am. When I want to know about something, like kalkwasser, I ask or search and that's when I know my brain is absorbing it and not being confused by it..:) maybe it's just me... but this is a very good thread anyway around it.

I knew soooo much before I started my first tank... I don't mean that to sound like I'm arrogant or something, just that I had done research for MONTHS before even putting water in the tank. But yeah that is a concern I guess, but it can't be helped. And Newbies probably won't run into this problem until their tank has been stable for quite some time. So once they have the problem, they can search, and here it is...

I am from Rochester NY, and I live south of there in the Western Fingerlakes -on Conesus lake.
