I've worked with a biologist from Mote on some sea turtle research and I've visited their labs. I believe that the coral facility at Mote's main lab in Sarasota, FL was damaged in a fire recently.
When I saw the familiar PVC pipes and frag plugs in the opening photo it caught my interest...but when I saw the shot of the "nursery" out in the open ocean it blew me away. So hard to think about trying to restore an entire reef one frag at a time....

This is a similar reef restoration project which I have visited a number of times over the last three years. The cool thing here is they low voltage electrical current out to this large garden of metal structures upon which they have attached coral frags...

The coral then get energy for the electrical current! ---- There is really amazing coral growth.

This a photo from a couple of years ago....now the metal frames are covered with giant beautiful corals.

Have wanted to try this in my own tank one day...

Very interesting. Do you know of anyone that uses the low voltage current in their frag grow-out tanks in the hobby? I'd never heard of this before...I'd be interested in reading more about the science behind the practice...

I have never heard of this being done elsewhere, but the results are really amazing. The metal frame shown in pic is now covered with beautiful mature corals.

Unfortunately, "OmarD" cannot go back and visit. I, mistakenly, confronted some local leaders with evidence of corruption (pocketing $ donated to support Natl. Park reef (Menjangan Island, just off Pemuteran - argueably one of the best diving "walls" in the Pacific) --- anyway, wound up in Jail --- then hospital to recover from "very rough" treatment received there :-[ ...(short story) --- reason for long stay in Indonesia.

Anyway, low voltage to frags mounted on metal frames should be easy for one to test. Or better yet, go to Indonesia and see for self... just keep in mind any kind of "activism" is greatly frowned upon there :-X
