Next add?

I have been wanting to get a clam and I am thinking a derasa is the way to go. I understand they get large it will be going into a 125. My question is I plan to have it in low nutrient because an sps dominate tank is my goal, will this cause any problems for it I know they like some nutrients on the water. Also, any thoughts or advice would be great. Not set on a derasa just hear they are the hardiest. Just rolling ideas around here don't plan on getting it next week or anything. I have two radions over my tank for light.

 

I think the Derasa is the best first clam, I have a derasa, crocea and maxima, and the derasa def seems to be the least sensitive. I think you may be right about it not liking an ultra low nutrient system though. Corrailine will prob chime in here and help ya with that, she's my clam guru gosh, now I feel like a suck up since she became a mod,lol, but she helped me in the past with my clam issues

 

sweet thanx for the input whered did you buy from? Looked at dd but the only have one derasa and I think I'll keep looking. the derasa on there is 5" which is a good size to start with for a clam right?

 

I got all my clams from DD and LA, I like the 14 day guarantee when it comes to a $60-200 clam, IMO, thats worth the wait. And yeah, I think bigger is better. Def do not get below 2"s as they have other needs and are just too testy. Personally, I'd sign up for the DD sneak peeks(be careful, this can be a costly decision, lol) and what for onion there, although others have had good experiences with other vendors.

if i hadnt had the ich issue I would have a couple more wrasses in my tank I like the girdled wrasse from yeterday. But not getting another fish until I haven't seen a trace of ich for atleast a month. the ich cost me about 700 in fish not buying from my LFS anymore either

For your first clam one from LA/DD a nice Derasa seems like a fantastic idea.
Personally I believe clams can tolerate more nutrient rich systems but lighting and stable appropriate parameters play the greatest role.

If you buy locally I suggest a clam over 2 inches. Check for the presence of Pyramid snails at the base near the hinge and foot. It should withdraw the mantle quickly in response to shadow and movement. And of course good coloration.

Your lucky that you have a nice big tank that you can house the larger clams like Derasa and Gigi in long term.
