Well I have no idea what happened but my the fleshy green part of my candy cane in one day started going brown and now the the green part has fallen off? They were doing great, never had a problem with them and now they are dying...any idea's and should I remove the remaining two from the tank?

    Hi Nemo,

Candy cane are susceptible to infection if their "skin" gets damaged. They are also vulnerable to algae. I had my candycane get damaged and I dipped it in reef dip and then watched the progress. Lucky for me nothing took root. However, you seem to be at a more advanced stage; whether or not your "skin" was damaged. I'd suggest doing an iodine dip and then make sure it has a moderate, random water flow. I believe you are being attacked by a diatom algae, but if it is something worse a nice iodine dip won't hurt. Best of luck Nemo.

how can I tell if it's a diatom algae attack. I don't see anything wrong with their stalks, haven't been moved in a dogs age? very weird I will have to pick up some iodine...it might be too late already cause I lost one completely.

Sorry to hear about your candy cane nemo. I lost my candy cane a month or so ago and eventually just through it out because something on it was spreading so fast I couldnt control it. I am sure you are not suffering from the same problem I had. I still to this day do not know what it was but check out the pick.

Oh I remember that pic Qtypie424. It is kinda creapy!! I had no idea candy cane was so fragil. Ive drop mine, and had a small rock fall on one of the heads, but after like 2 days it was puffed back up and looked like nothing happend. Ill try to be more carfull with it. It just seams to get the most impacts of anything I have for some reason, lol.

Not that it will help you now, and I am mad at myself for not mentioning this to you when you first posted about your candy cane. However, atleast if this happens to you again you will possibly be able to eliminate the death of your candy cane.

You could have broken off the top of the canes, down to the part that was infected. The candy canes were not dying even with the growth on it because that part of the candy cane is the skeleton made out of calcium, and strontium basically. But as long as the tissue at the top was not affected, you could have save it.
You could have possibly scrapped off or dipped the coral in a fresh water dip to possibly reverse the problematic growth what ever it was!!!!
Again sorry as I don't know what I was thinking as to why I didn't tell you this earlier.:(

Yes I tried dipping it into fresh water a couple of times but after the second dip it began to grow so rapidly it wasnt funny and I do believe by the time I posted it on here it had spread nearly to the tips not even leaving half and inch to start fresh with but thanks any way I appreciate the thought. I even tried to scrape the stuff off the sides of it but oh well I have learned from that experience.

no the candy cane died. to be honest i still don't know what it was. One day I came home and the green heads were all shriveled and turning brown around the mouth. next day the green part had started falling off. I don't think there was anything I could do to save them. No slime, no fungus, no algae on them. very weird.

how bright was the coral when you bought it because it sounds to me that there is a possibility that it may have been dyed.
